NYS Education Department Approves CASSE

Graduate students at Syracuse University and SUNY-ESF can now earn an advanced credential in sustainability offered through the SEP that will provide them with the skilled knowledge needed to address the economic, environmental, technical and social challenges facing enterprises seeking to achieve sustainable operations and practices. The New York State Department of Education has recently approved the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Sustainable Enterprise (CASSE), which was developed to engage graduate students from a wide range of academic backgrounds in a trans-disciplinary program focused on sustainable strategies for organizations. The CASSE curriculum will be delivered by expert faculty and researchers from the Whitman School, SUNY-ESF, the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science (LCS), SyracuseCoE - the four curricular partners of the SEP - as well as guests presenters from the public and private sectors.

SEP Receives $35,000 in Continued Support from Carrier

The SEP recently received a second $35,000 gift from Carrier Corp., bringing Carrier's total support of the SEP to $70,000. The generous gift will go toward supporting the SEP's continued engagement in sustainability-focused outreach, curriculum, and research, including co-sponsorship of the SURE 2009 program. John Mandyck SU '89, G '92, vice president of sustainability and environmental strategies for Carrier Corp., presented the gift to the SEP.

L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science Joins Curricular Collaboration

LCS has long been a leader in assessing and managing environmental contamination, and now the school has joined the SEP as a curricular partner, collaborating on course ideas and implementation, in particular the development of the new CASSE. The CASSE curriculum uniquely integrates business, science, engineering and policy instruction with practical knowledge in sustainability.

SEP to Co-Sponsor SURE 2009

On Nov. 3-4, 2009, SUNY-ESF, in collaboration with the SEP, will present "Sustainable Use of Renewable Energy 2009 (SURE 2009): Putting Renewable Technologies to Work." This event is part of the SEP Seminar Series and is offered for businesspeople, entrepreneurs, non-profits, architects, engineers, government officials, community leaders, educators and students interested in renewable energy technologies.

Previous SEP Seminar Series events include "Business and Sustainability: Purpose? Profitable? Possible!" and "Benefit the Planet and Your Bottom Line: Sustainability Strategies for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises," both in 2008. SyracuseCoE to Host Healthy Buildings 2009

In September, SEP partner the SyracuseCoE will host Healthy Buildings 2009, a premier international conference focused on green technologies for buildings and communities. Healthy Buildings 2009 will provide a forum for exchange of leading research and technology developments, a unique opportunity to share information on innovative products and services, and an extraordinary venue to network with national and global leaders and professionals in the fields of indoor air quality and healthy built environments.

Smardon's Book Published

Dr. Richard Smardon, professor of environmental studies at SUNY-ESF and an inaugural member of SEP's leadership and core faculty groups, recently published Sustaining the World's Wetlands: Setting Policy and Resolving Conflicts (New York: Springer, 2009), which examines international wetlands policy in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America; discusses differences between wetlands management issues in developed and developing countries; and suggests strategies for future wetlands management. SEP Students Present at SU Showcase

Undergraduate students enrolled in SOM 400/LPP 400/EST 496: Sustainable Enterprise in the 21st Century presented their research on the lifecycle of common consumer products during the Focus the Nation on Climate Change program at SU Showcase on April 21, 2009. The products assessed included microwave popcorn, by Joe Cannon (architecture) and Kerrin McFadden (Whitman School); personal computers, by Anthony Capece (SUNY-ESF) and Becky Pekarski (Whitman School); chocolate candy, by Tammy Cohen (Whitman School) and Gregory Levy (architecture); grapes, by Yuki Nakamura (SUNY-ESF) and Joe Ralbovsky (policy studies); blue jeans, by Alex Blake (SUNY-ESF) and Carol Vanderbosch (architecture); and hamburger, by James Conley (architecture) and Brendan Lytle (Whitman School).

Sustainable Enterprise in the 21st Century is open to all SU and SUNY-ESF juniors and seniors. It will be offered for the second time in spring 2010.
